U12 Anglo Scottish Invitational Tournament - 2014

Final tournament of the season was the U12 Anglo Scottish Invitational Tournament which was held at Inverclyde, Largs on 17/18th May, 2014.

The following report was submitted by Lynn Young:

What a great wee bunch of borders U12 players we took. However!! 16 tie breaks is not good for the coaches or parents stress levels. First up was Yorkshire where if we'd won 2 more tie breaks we could have taken them!! sadly we went down 6-4. West next and 5-5 with 4 tie breaks and we lost on points. Eventual winners Clyde beat us square on 8-2. After dinner Lothian with another 3 tie breaks but well beaten 9-1.

Day 2 began with just one tie break and an 8-2 win over our friends in Cumbria. Penultimate game Tyne Tees with one tie break and an 8-2 win with a final hard fought match v North East and 4 very tight tie breaks but a 6-4 loss!! OMG!! So Team Borders were 5th overall with the lovely Iona Fox winning the Moira Goudie award voted for by all the other coaches for attitude and sportsmanship.

What a lovely way to end the badminton season. Many thanks to all the parents for their support particularly the ones who's children were not even playing. Well done folks!

RSL U10 Midlothian Championships - 2014

Four young Borderers entered The Midlothian U-10 Badminton Championships, on Sunday, 11th May at Penicuik Leisure Centre. After some hard fought group stages, the Borders contingent settled down to the task in hand, playing in the groups which they had qualified for. After some great badminton and very close games, the results were as follows:

Boys Singles

Duncan Crowe (St.Abbs) 'A' group - Knockout stage

Kieran Burns (Duns) 'B' group - Quarter Finals

Girls Singles

Tilly Lucas (Coldingham) 'A' group - Knockout Stage

Jessica Mitchell (Peebles) 'B' group - Runner up

Boys Doubles

Duncan Crowe & Kieran Burns 'B' group - Runners up

Girls Doubles

Tilly Lucas & Jessica Mitchell 'A' group - Knockout Stage

The 4 young players had a very enjoyable day, with some very proud parents in attendance. They gained some valuable experience and hopefully met some new friends/ future adversaries along the way. Well done to the 4 young Borderers, some of whom were playing in their first Big open tournament. The future of Border Badminton is clearly in good hands! Thanks to Dave Burns for the report and results.

Scottish Primary Schools Championships - May, 2014

BORDER PLAYERS TAKE CHAMPIONSHIPS BY STORM!!!

12 young under 12 aged badminton players represented 6 schools and the Borders on Saturday, 3rd May, 2014 at the Scottish Schools National Championships held at the Bells Sports Centre in Perth.

First up was the Singles tournament where Callum Smith from Greenlaw took the National title with Callum Stokes from Duns Primary taking the B championships. Isaac Weir also played in the Singles getting through to the quarter finals.

The cup dating back to 1976 has many well know players on it including Robert Blair Scotland’s commonwealth’s medal hope and Andy Bowman currently Scotland’s Senior assistant National performance coach. This is the first time a boy from the Borders has won this prestigious event and along with his brother Tyler won the doubles event completing a clean sweep of the boys events for Duns Primary school. Callum and Tyler would like to thank their sponsors Ashaway, Berwickshire sports council, Rowan Boland trust and the Russell Hogg Trust. We wish them well in their next tournament an U12 in York on the 10th May.

In the girls Iona Fox (Kingsland PS) Jodie Black from Coldingham PS and Amy Kenneally (Duns PS) all got into the  A championships with only Jodie getting as far as the quarter finals.

In the Level Doubles section the Borders did even better with Jodie Black and partner Indie Lucas also from Coldingham Primary making it to the final of the A Doubles only to take the Runner/up position as did Iona Fox and Jessica Mitchell from Kingsland Primary in the B Championships.

The boys, however, went one better to win both Double titles. Firstly, Duncan Crowe (Reston Primary) and Jacob Carter (Coldingham Primary) making it into the A championship sections and then Callum Smith doing the double to take the A Doubles title with his brother Tyler Smith while Aiden Ferrier and Gavin McLaughlin from West Linton Primary took the B Championships.

U13 Anglo-Scottish Invitational Tournament - 2014

While an Easter Sunday is meant to be spent rolling Easter Eggs and lying in the brilliant sunny weather  9 young Border Badminton players were slogging it out on the Badminton courts at Meadowmill Sports Centre in Tranent in the Anglo-Scottish Invitational event on 20th April, 2014. Only being beaten by the eventual winners Lothian A, the team did very well indeed. They drew with Northumberland (who they should have beaten but there were a few tired brains making unforced errors). Victories over Lothian B, visiting team Isle of Man and North East secured the second place medal for the team. Coaches Peter Hardie, David Burns and Lynn Young were delighted with the result as we only took 4 girls and were missing one of our top young team players Jodie Black who was in Belgium with the Scottish Development squad. Well done Team Borders.

Duns - Borders Badminton League Winners 2013 - 2014

Duns became the first club in recent times to wrestle the league title away from Berwick who have dominated the league over the past yew years. Being able to play a well balanced side throughout the season with a good mix of both youthful and experienced players, Duns only failed to win one match earlier in the season and are worthy winners of the league title. Although an earlier match between Jedburgh and Berwick had been postponed and not replayed, this match would not have had any affect on who would win the league. Congratulations to Duns on winning the league title and to everyone who participated in the Borders Badminton League this season.

Kelso Primary School Competition

With over 114 games to play at the Kelso 'Open' Primary Badminton Tournament on  Sunday, 8th December, 2013 it was just as well that Lynn Young had a laptop handy to help with the organisation. First time ever in the Borders Badminton history that the Technical table was run by computer and two secondary pupils ran the tournament directors table, Linsey Young from Kelso High School and Molly MacDonald from Berwickshire High School, while the adults merely supervised player and court management, clothes and coffee stalls. There was a superb support from parents and family members as well as border badminton coaches Pete Hardie, Dave Burns, Paul MacDonald and Judith Younger. Senior players came along to help with the umpiring despite not playing themselves. 'It was very humbling to see so many parents and coaches willing to support our tournament'.

11 girls and 26 boys battled it out for the Single and Doubles competitions with entries coming from Peebles, Hawick, Jedburgh, Kelso, Duns, Eyemouth, Coldingham, Reston, St.Boswells and a huge boys entry from West Linton.

Winners of the A competitions were: Singles Winner Jodie Black (Coldingham PS) Runner/up Iona Fox (Kingsland PS)

Iona and Jodie then took the Level Doubles together beating Indie Lucas and Ushika Kidd from (Coldingham PS) in the final.

Lucy MacDonald (Duns PS) won the 'B' Championships beating Hannah Flack (St.Boswells). Best Girl winner was Jessica Mitchell from Peebles who had a great tournament raising her game throughout the day and showing interest in what was going on by asking lots of good questions.

The Boys competition saw Isaac Weir (Duns PS) take the title beating Martin Goldie (Drumlanrig PS).

Isaac Weir (Duns PS) and Gavin McLauchlin (West Linton) teamed up to take Patrick Harrison and Struan Wells (both West Linton) in a hard fought match.

'B' Championships winner Aiden Ferrier (West Linton) had a fantastic game against Kelso's Adam Middlemass (Broomlands PS)

The level doubles was won by Duncan Crowe and Martin Goldie took Max Blundell and Louis Jeffrey (both West Linton)

Here the Best Boy was Fergus Murray (Duns PS) for his care, support and sportsmanship shown in all his games with a special extra award going to Gareth Williams (Howdenburn PS) for the way he supported his very young and 'first time' competitor partner.

Thanks were given to all the helpers and supporters as well as Blair's Jewellers for providing the medals and trophies. Scottish Schools and Scottish National U15 Champion, Robbie Patterson from Eyemouth also came along to umpire and support the young players. He gave up one of his spare rest days from his Scottish Squad training to come and support the event. He also presented the boys singles medal winners. The next primary competitions to take place will be the Border Primary Championships on Saturday, 8th February, 2014 at Berwickshire High School in Duns and the Duns 'open' tournament on Saturday, 1st March, 2014 also at Berwickshire High School.
